If you are worried because of your high glucose blood levels in the morning, then you must read on to find the answer. Here you will find the simplest solution. Morning blood glucose levels are the most uncontrollable part of the disease. The underlying cause is not that it is difficult to control it; rather it is because most people fail to understand that why these glucose blood levels are very high.
Cause # 1: When a diabetic sufferer is sleeping his levels of blood glucose fall down because of the insulin dose that diabetic took during day time. The hormones that are capable of increasing the glucose blood levels are secreted thus resulting in an elevated blood sugar level in the morning. This is called Somogyi effect. In some mornings the levels of glucose in blood are low if it fails to trigger the insulin production by pancreas; while in other mornings it may be high. Generally the diabetic feels that underlying cause is shortage of insulin dose that was injected at night; so they increase the dose and makes the situation even worse. Before adjusting the dose of insulin it is better to go for a glucose blood test at midnight. If the glucose blood level at midnight is too low then it could be because of Somogyi Effect. In this case the dose of insulin must be decreased and never increased.
Cause # 2: If the glucose blood levels are high in the morning because of the secretion of plenty of growth hormone during night time then it is because of Dawn phenomenon. If the morning level of glucose in blood are constantly high then night time long acting insulin takes care of this issue.
Cause # 3: Another underlying cause of high morning blood glucose level is not linked with the other two stated before. In this case the dose of insulin taken in the night time does not work for longer hours for keeping the sugar levels rising at night. Older types of insulin like NPH used to have an increased tendency of falling short in the manner. However the newer formulas of long acting insulin like Detemir and Glargine do not fall short.
These are the three most major causes of high glucose blood level in the morning. It is critical to understand the underlying cause to treat the problem. Mere treating the signs and symptoms of diabetes is not a rational behavior.
